Upskilling your night life team

Bristol’s night time economy is about more than the pubs, clubs, venues and restaurants – it’s about the 116,000 people that work from 6pm to 6am and support the city. Without them, the city that we know and love would be a very different place.

To help create a vibrant nightlife across the city, support a diverse and inclusive offering, and prioritise safety alongside entertainment we’ve launched two training programmes to get you and your teams ready for the autumn and the return of university students back to the city.

You’re busy, your time is precious. We know that. That’s why the Bristol Nights training has been co-designed with the night time sector to make sure it’s as useful and relevant as possible to those attending.

Signing onto a session is also an opportunity to connect with other businesses, your peers, to find out what they’re doing and how effective it is, helping you to build a solution that’s right for your business.

Thrive at Night

Bristol Nights pioneered the Thrive at Night programme, and now we’ve partnered with The Burnt Chef Project – global leaders in mental health and wellbeing support for hospitality – to run a new series of workshops for night time businesses and teams.

In response to feedback, sessions will between in-person sessions and online giving you greater flexibility to join.

The next session, Spotting, managing and preventing burnout is being held online on Wednesday 21 August from 2pm to 5pm. In this session we’ll uncover why burnout is so prevalent within the hospitality sector and what you can do about it. The session is perfect for anyone working in and feeling the pressure of a high-pressure environment – helping you to spot the signs, manage workloads and prevent burnout of you and your teams.

Future sessions run monthly through into 2025, covering a wide range of topics including: Neurodiversity awareness training; Introduction to LGBTQIA+ inclusion; Resilience; Introduction to Financial Health and more!

Women’s Safety Charter

Since launching the Women’s Safety Charter in March 2022, we have trained over 500 people in spotting and responding to harassment.

96% of people who have completed the Bristol Nights training say they’d recommend it to others.

Our aim is to build a network of safety advocates across the city at night, whether you work behind the bar, in a taxi, on the door or anywhere in a public facing role in nightlife.

The first commitment once you’ve signed up to the Women's Safety Charter is to appoint a Champion. As soon as you have, we have a host of support to help guide your organisation through the steps outlined in the charter.

We offer three types of training:

Nightlife teams: anti-harassment training for nightlife teams, teaching them how to recognise, respond to, and record harassment, including bystander intervention training.

Champion Training: empowering Champions, giving them the tools and techniques to create change and embed a zero tolerance to all forms of harassment. If you haven’t got a Champion nominate one now!

Train the Trainer: specifically for Champions who have completed the Nightlife Teams training, to give them the skills and confidence to deliver it to their teams. With a little forward planning, you can be one step ahead so you’ve got everything in place to train your team after your recruitment drive.

For those who have already attended a session, our training is constantly evolving to meets the needs of the sector, so there’s always something new to learn…. including the Worker Protection Bill, an amendment of Equality Act 2010, which comes into effect from October 2024. The new bill will strengthen existing protection for workers against sexual harassment, placing a duty on employers to take ‘reasonable steps’ to prevent sexual harassment.

Joining a session is an opportunity to connect with other businesses and your peers to find out what they’re doing and how effective it is to help you build a solution that’s right for your business.
